CURIOUS CURTIS COLLECTIBLES

Jerry and Carol Curtis are true trail followers when it comes to looking for their carnival glass. They have traveled all over the United States in their pursuit of the 揾unt? coming up with such unusual 揻inds?that many of them are 搊ne-of-a-kind?and not listed nor recorded in any written matter. We feel privileged to display for our viewers some of these unrecorded, unnamed pieces of carnival glass.

SCROLL FLUTED - 3 in. high x 6 in. opening x 3 + 7-8ths. in. wide.
SCROLL FLUTED - 3 in. high x 6 in. opening x 3 7/8 in. wide.

SCROLL FLUTED is the name attached to this marigold rose bowl. One author credits the piece to Imperial production, but it really has none of the characteristics seen in glass from that manufacturer. The edge treatment, marigold coloration and the art-deco type design, overall leads us to believe that it was manufactured in Europe. Another possibility is one of the U.S. Glass Companies. Jacob's Ladder is attributed to that conglomerate, and this rose bowl could well have come from the same manufacturer?

(TRUDY)-ETCHED DECO Compote.

The 3-footed plate,  ETCHED DECO or TRUDY is from a 3-piece mold. Curtis' found it about 20 years ago while visiting a flea market in Shipshewana, IN. Until comparing the piece to some Imperial BALLOONS selections we display in another segment on the 101 site, they had thought it to be from that grouping. It is etched as the Balloons are, but the design is enough different that we believe it to have been produced by one of the other manufacturers. None of the Imperial Catalogs illustrate the plate, and since it has not been found in large numbers, perhaps a smaller competing producer created the piece? We suggest Standard Glass Co. Should any of our viewers have evidence or knowledge of other pieces with a like pattern, we would appreciate hearing from you.
Note: This pedestal compote and plate are of the same pattern and purported to be of Standard Glass manufacture during the 1920s. The compote is 3 1/8?tall. Pedestal foot is 3 ¼?wide. It has a top diameter of 6 1/8? The pedestal plate is 2?tall, 7 ½?wide, and has a 3 ¼?wide foot?D/D)

LADDERS - 8 inches

Base of LADDERS vase
is Square - 2.75 inches across.

LADDERS Vase - It was found some years ago in Coastal Oregon. There are four alternating wide panels of thick, heavy glass which feels like good quality cut lead crystal. Tarentum Glass Company produced this crystal pattern as their #292 in 1901. A delicate yellowish iridescence (more yellow than clambroth in appearance) places it in the carnival glass category. Was the iridescence applied in an after-market effort? It is suspected to be the case.

La Belle Mum Vase -18 in. girth, 7. 75 in. tall, 3.25 in. base, 3 & five-eighths in. opening..
La Belle Mum Vase
18 in. girth, 7. 75 in. tall, 3.25 in. base,
3 & 5/8 inch opening.

La Belle Mum Vase:  The vase has a complex design for such a small vessel. Base glass is clear, having an amber iridized finish with colorful accents.
This vase is identified in Rose Presznick's Book 2, page 37, plate #138. Rose called it "La Belle Mum", "Chrysanthemum", and "La Belle". She mentions it was found in Goofus Glass, and was probably a pickle glass using sealing wax to hold the contents.

PRISM & STAR Cordial Set.
SWIRL Liquor Set.

PRISM & STAR Cordial Set: Czech or German made, we believe. The Jug is 8 ¼?tall. It has a rayed base which measures 3 3/8? The Jigger is 2 ¼?tall, 2?across the top rim and 1 1/8?across the prism'd base of thick glass. The jug has four panels, each having a large 搒tar?and prisms below the star, and around the neck. The 4 ribs have an arrow pointing upward that ends near the neck.
Janet Knechtel sent us a photo of this same cordial set having 6 matching jiggers. 4/09

SWIRL Liquor Set: Jerry calls the pattern Interior Swirl. The maker is unknown. The decanter is 8 ¾?tall. With stopper in place, it is 10 ¾?tall.
The base is 3 7/8?wide. Jiggers are about 2?high with a base of 1 ½?diameter

FLOWER ARRANGER:  Has the boxed 揓?logo, which indicates Jeannette Glass as the producer.

ETCHED FUSCHIA Whiskey Set:  Jug is 7 ½?high, 6?at the bulge and 8 ½?high with stopper. Jigger is about 2 ½?high. The glass is thick and heavy. Cambridge Glass has been suggested as the maker, but we have not found it in our Cambridge books/papers.

RADIANCE Rosebowl.

RADIANCE Syrup Jug
RADIANCE Syrup Jug.

RADIANCE Rose Bowl and Syrup: Riverside produced utilitarian wares. Whether or not they iridized their glass is not known, but it is unlikely. Perhaps when the after-market purchaser performed the marigold application, the enamel-painting was applied at the same time?
Rose Bowl measurement: 3 ¾?high, 3?base, 3 ½?opening
Syrup measurement: 6?to top of pouring lip, 3 ½?base. 2-piece mold; 6 panel form with handle annealed on one seam.

Dean & Diane Fry, 6/09

When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you,
You shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.
There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire,
Or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens,
Or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord,
and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.
You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.
For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners;
But as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.  (Deuteronomy 18:9-14)
